THE ISAAC HALL HOUSE
The Isaac Hall House was built in 1720 by Andrew Hall and is the oldest
surviving house in Medford Square. Andrew married Abigail (Walker) Hall. This three-story wood-framed house was extensively remodeled in the Federalist style by Hall’s son, Isaac who married Abigail (Cutter) Hall. When Andrew died, Isaac, his mother, and wife, continued to reside at this home.
The house has a prominent history in the American Revolutionary War.
Isaac Hall was the Captain of the Medford Minutemen, and his house
was the first place Paul Revere stopped at on the night of April 18-19, 1775, before the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Revere warned that “The British regulars were out” and wanted to seize Sam Adams and John Hancock who were in Lexington. This warning prompted Captain Hall to mobilize the Medford Minutemen who numbered 59 strong. The Captain also sent an unnamed rider to Malden, to alert the Malden Minutemen, activating the Minutemen warning system. Medford Minutemen saw action at Merriam’s Corner (one mile out of Lexington), at the Battle of Menotomy (Arlington), and then helped chase the retreating British Redcoats all the way back to Charlestown.
Medford’s Isaac Hall House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 1975. It formerly was a funeral home and is now the Islamic Cultural Center of Medford. ICCM values “loving our neighbors, serving our community, engaging with our local community and initiating acts of charitable service.” In that spirit, they are preserving the historical Isaac Hall House and participate annually in the reenactment of Paul Revere’s Ride and first stop, on his way to warn the Patriots that the British soldiers were on the march, leading to the start of the American Revolutionary War.
